La foule (The crowd) is a video device consisting of a heavy construction
beam in steel, acting as a rail for a plasma screen. In this way, the
screen can be moved the full length of the rail. In the video it projects,
a naked man walks in profile against an illuminated white background.
The body is that of the artist. It walks without advancing, demonstrating
perfect stability in relation to the edges of the screen, which in turn starts
moving in the character’s stead.
This pointless movement repeats itself endlessly. The movement always
remains the same: automatic, fixed. In this endless walk, the man trapped
inside the machine is condemned to advance, without seeming to be
particularly bothered by it. The absurd position of a virtual Sisyphus who
has even been deprived of his boulder. Two phenomena impact the character
and the image, without disturbing this perpetual movement. The
character is impacted by a loss of formal substance that occurs following
a growing rumbling of the crowd, expressing a new duality, where identity
gives way to the relationship to the collective other; whereas the image
is affected by an electronic graphical disturbance that reveals its nature,
further disembodying the character.
The alchemy implemented becomes more sophisticated in order to succeed
in corrupting human matter.
