Pour Pascal Bauer, la vidéo devient un objet. Les oeuvres qu’il
produit présentent des écrans dépouillés de toute enveloppe
et signe d’époque, pour n’être que des objets techniques.
Ils portent des images « logo » qui représentent une action
continue dans un temps infini, participant par cette fixité à cette
mise en objet. Ces écrans peuvent être accompagnés d’une mise
en scène minimaliste, constituée par exemple d’un simple bout
de bois servant de support à l’écran et d’accessoire à l’image.
Mais ils peuvent aussi être le point central d’une mécanique
complexe, pouvant aller jusqu’à la robotique, dans des installations,
qui n’ont pas d’équivalent et qui ont pour fonction
de mettre en mouvement ces écrans de façon synchronisée à
l’image qui les anime.
Le cogneur présente le buste d’un personnage (l’artiste), qui
tourne sur lui-même, psalmodiant, puis se penche en avant de
façon répétitive, se cognant régulièrement le front contre une
planche en bois, dans une attitude de prière hystérique.
La bande-son fait apparaître une double rythmique de cette
percussion, impliquant la présence d’un deuxième individu, non
vu, effectuant la même prière.
L’animation sera reprise pour réaliser l’installation monumentale
Error not found dans la chapelle du musée d’Art et d’Histoire de
Saint-Denis en 2012.
Video becomes an object for Pascal Bauer. The works he produces
present screens stripped of all adornment and signs of the time to
become simply technical objects. They feature "logo" images that
represent a continuous action over infinite time, their fixity contributing
to the object status. These screens may be accompanied
by a minimalist staging composed, for example, of a simple piece
of wood serving as a support for the screen and an accessory to
the image. But they can also be the central point of a complex
mechanism, even robotics, in the installations, which have no
equivalent and are used to put these screens into synchronized
motion with the image illuminating them.
Le cogneur (The hitter) presents the bust of a character (the artist),
who turns in a circle, chanting, then bends forward in a repetitive
way, regularly banging his forehead against a wooden board,
in an attitude of hysterical prayer.
The sound track reveals a dual rhythm to this percussion, implying
the presence of a second person, unseen, saying the same prayer.
The animation was revised to produce the monumental installation
Error not found in the chapel of the Art and History Museum
of Saint-Denis in 2012 (p. 70).
