question ne se pose pas.
First complex robotics experiment, Le mur is a device with
multiple movements that allows a screen bearing its manmade-
beast (another reference to Kafka) to move freely over
a surface limited by the scope of the machine. The equipment,
more sophisticated than the chain that allows the dog some
freedom of movement, imposes spatial constraints, just as a
web limits the spider. But the spider can leave its web.
There is no rebellion in Pascal Bauer’s settings. The question
does not come up. The control of the situation is such that it
is not even conceivable to imagine the notion of constraint.
The real metaphor does not apply to enslavement. It applies
to the necessity of doubt. The first anxiety felt in these works
stems from certainties, from dogmatism. From the readymade,
stock idea. Pascal Bauer does not show us the victims
of a system. He tells us about our capacity for withdrawal. He
tells us about our own responsibility for the mechanisms hiding
the contours of our own alienation from us.
