Comme dans L’élu, il ne s’agit plus ici du héros souffrant
pour racheter les péchés de l’humanité. Le
corps fixé à la croix est celui de l’artiste, vêtu d’un
seul pagne repris dans l’iconographie chrétienne
médiévale, comme une ultime supercherie. Le tragique
de la mort du Christ est évacué pour être
remplacé par l’absurde.
Cet élu n’a, en somme, rien d’un véritable élu distingué
d’entre les hommes. Antihéros plus que héros,
il est l’homme ordinaire, banal et commun, placé là
par on ne sait quel hasard.
De toute cette agitation ne sort finalement qu’un
personnage insignifiant, pas même à l’échelle de la
croix, pas même réel : une simple image virtuelle sur
un écran fixé à une croix en chêne massif, bien réelle
celle-ci. Mais cette croix n’est pas ostensiblement
dressée au-dessus d’un autel : elle est couchée sur
le sol, elle rampe plus qu’elle ne s’élève, ne laissant
plus à son occupant que l’illusion d’une destinée.
As in L’élu, this is no longer a matter of the hero suffering
to expiate the sins of humanity. The body attached
to the cross is that of the artist, wearing nothing but
a loincloth taken from medieval Christian iconography,
like an ultimate hoax. The tragic aspect of Christ’s
death is evacuated, in order to be to be replaced by
the absurd.
In short, this chosen one has nothing in common with a
genuine chosen one of the kind that stands out among
men. More antihero than hero, he is the ordinary, runof-
the-mill, common man, there by who knows what
stroke of fate.
From all this agitation only an insignificant character
emerges, not even up to the scale of the cross, not
even real: a simple virtual image on a screen attached
to a solid oak cross, which is very real. Yet this cross is
not conspicuously hung above an altar: it is laid on the
floor, it crawls rather than climbs, leaving its occupant
with only the illusion of a destiny.
